On 10 April 2010, a delegation of representatives of the Polish elite, headed by the President of Poland Lech Kaczyński and the last President of the Republic of Poland in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski, went to Katyn. They were to pay tribute to the victims of the Katyn crime. The presidential delegation included deputy marshals of the Sejm and Senate, representatives of parliament, commanders of all kinds of the Polish Armed Forces, employees of the President's Chancellery, heads of state institutions, including the President of NBP Sławomir Skrzypek, representatives of ministries, veterans' and social organizations, clergy and accompanying persons. At 8:41 a.m. Polish time, the Presidential plane crashed while approaching the landing at Smolensk airport. 96 people were killed. On the 10th anniversary of the Smolensk tragedy the National Bank of Poland issued a silver coin in memory of people who died in the Smolensk crash.
