The creation of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union "Solidarity" was a response to the difficult living conditions of Poles. The communist system deprived people of freedom.
The first workers' riots took place in 1956 in Poznan, but were bloody suppressed. Then protests broke out on the Coast, in Radom, Ursus and Plock. They were caused by price rises, lack of food, low salaries, privileges of the officers who were supposed to keep the PZPR in power.
Radio Free Europe or illegal publications reached an increasing group of recipients. In 1978 Karol Wojtyła was elected Pope, and a year later he said his words: "May thy Spirit come down! And he will renew the face of the earth. This land!", which breathed power into Poles.
The price rise in July 1980 started an avalanche that could not be stopped. Solidarity" was created, which changed not only the fate of Poland but also of Europe. Apart from economic and social demands, freedom of association, freedom of speech, the right to strike, and the release of political prisoners were also demanded.
