Another heroic battle belonging to the "Polish Thermopylae" series.

The Battle of Dytiatyn took place on 16 September 1920. It was fought by the 3rd Battalion of the 13th Infantry Regiment against two brigades of the Red Army. The battle became known as the Polish Thermopylae.

The battle of Dytiatyn stopped the march of two Soviet brigades for a whole day. This battle went down in the history of the Polish Armed Forces as a symbol of a soldier's duty fulfilled to the end. A chapel-monument was erected on the battlefield (destroyed in 1948). Polish losses: 97 killed, 86 wounded, 6 cannons and 5 machine guns. Soviet losses unknown.

The battles of Polish soldiers at Dytiatyn were commemorated on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw, with an inscription on one of the plaques in the Second Republic and after 1990. - "DYTIATYN 16 IX 1920".

On the reverse of the coin there is a fragment of a reproduction of a painting by Jerzy Kossak "Battle of Dytiatyn 16 September 1920". On the obverse of all coins of the "Polish Thermopylae" series there is Athena, the goddess of just war and wisdom.
