Since people first discovered gold, it has been one of humanity's greatest desires. Over the centuries, the desire to gather as much "royal gold" as possible has given rise to a legend of a place where countless of its riches are located. When Spanish explorers arrived in South America in the early 16th century, they heard the story of "El Dorado". In the area of today's Bogota, Indians from the Chibcha tribe led a ritual. When the candidate for a new ruler successfully passed 6 years of hard trials and sacrifices, he was sailing to the middle of Lake Guatavita on a raft loaded with piles of gold. He then threw all his treasures into the water to gain the gods' graciousness through this sacrifice for the duration of his reign. The legend of the mountains of gold reached Europe, where many daredevils tried to find a place to store it, often paying with their lives. Gold has not yet been found.
