Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was a Portuguese sailor and explorer; in Spanish service in 1519 he set out at the head of 5 ships with the intention of reaching India, circumnavigating the globe in a westerly direction. Magellan reached the southern tip of South America, where he discovered the strait that was later called the Strait of Magellan and made his way to the assessments, which he called the Pacific. In 1521 he reached the Philippines, where he was killed in a skirmish with the islanders, and one of his five ships with a crew of only 18 sailors under the command of Elcaño returned to Spain in 1522. Ferdinand Magellan's expedition finally confirmed the sphericity of the Earth.
