Since 1993, the National Bank of Poland has issued a series of coins "Animals of the World". Its purpose is to present animal species threatened by the developing civilization.
The obverse of the coin shows the image of the eagle established as the national emblem of the Republic of Poland. On the reverse side there are images of a grey seal with young ones. The Marine Station of the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdansk, located in Hel, conducts research aimed at preparing for the experimental breeding and restitution of the grey seal to the Gulf of Gdansk.
