The XXVIII Olympics took place in Athens between 13 and 29 August 2004. More than 10 500 athletes from 202 countries took part in it. During the two-week sporting competition in 28 Olympic disciplines 301 sets of medals were distributed. Poland at the Athens Olympics was represented by 202 athletes, including 139 men and 63 women. Polish team won a total of 10 medals (3 gold, 2 silver, 5 bronze), it was the weakest performance of Polish athletes since the time of the Olympics in Melbourne in 1956 (9 medals). The most medals were won by swimmer Otylia Jędrzejczak (3 medals - 1 gold and 2 silver), gold medal was also won by Robert Korzeniowski (fourth Olympic gold medal in his career) in walking, and two rowers Tomasz Kucharski and Robert Sycz, defended the title of Olympic champion from Sydney in 2000. Bronze medals were won by: Mateusz Kusznierewicz in sailing - Finn class, Agata Wróbel in weightlifting, Sylwia Gruchała in floret, Anna Rogowska in pole jump, as well as Aneta Pastuszka and Beata Sokołwska - Kulesza in kayaking (two 500 m).
The reverse and obverse of the coin was covered with fine gold.
