Irises is a picture painted by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh in 1889, during his stay in a psychiatric hospital. It was painted a year before his suicide in 1890. Irises, like a large number of paintings of the time, was inspired by the Japanese painterly art of Ukiyo-e. The first owner of the painting was the art critic and one of Van Gogh's first fans, Octave Mirbeau, who purchased Irises for 300 francs.
