He was the author of over three hundred oil paintings and several hundred drawings and sketches. He is considered to be one of the most outstanding Polish painters in history. In 1852-1858 he studied with Władysław Łuszczkiewicz and Wojciech Stattler at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków, of which he was later the director (from 1873). His pupils included Maurycy Gottlieb, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiański.
