This magnificent coin was minted to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the famous city of Karakorum, which was the capital of the Mongol Empire from 1235 to 1260. In 1220 Genghis Khan, the great Mongol conqueror, established his headquarters there and used it as a base for his invasion of China. The year 1220 is generally accepted as the year in which the foundations of the city were built.
Thanks to modern technology the reverse and obverse of the coin are decorated with realistic images of Karakorum architecture. An interesting addition in the form of a red glass insert in the central part of the coin attracts the collector's attention and provides an excellent contrast to the silver.
