Baczyński started writing poems already as a student of the Stefan Batory Gymnasium in Warsaw. In secondary school Baczyński belonged to the secret radical socialist group "Spartakus". During the occupation, Baczyński lived at 3 Hołówki Street. After the creation of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940, he and his mother stayed on the Aryan side, risking being shot on the spot if their Jewish origin was discovered. From autumn 1942 to summer 1943 he studied Polish philology at the secret University of Warsaw. At the beginning of the occupation, Baczyński joined the socialist group "Flames", he also wrote in the left-wing literary and social monthly "Droga". However, the leftist sympathies of the young poet weakened significantly after 17 September 1939, and finally cooled down after the discovery of graves in Katyn in April 1943. During the occupation, Baczynski graduated from the underground cadet school of the "Agricola" Reserve Reserve, took part in several sabotage actions, including the blowing up of a German train on the Tłuszcz-Urle route, which was carried out on April 27th, 1944.
