The 14th World Cup in 1990 was held in Italy for the second time. Italy had previously hosted the World Cup in 1934. It was then that the Italians won the world championship for the first time. The championship was scheduled to start on 8th June and the final match on 8th July 1990.
The World Cup in Italy was the last championship for the teams of Czechoslovakia, West Germany and the USSR. Twenty-four teams took part in the final tournament. Ireland, Costa Rica and the United Arab Emirates made their debut at the tournament. For the first time in twenty years there was no Polish team.
