The Thinker, 1889-1890, is perhaps the most famous sculpture by French sculptor Auguste Rodin. Originally named The Poet and conceived as part of a larger work, entitled The Gates of Hell, The Thinker has earned Rodin considerable recognition and acclaim, so much so that it has become one of the most instantly recognizable symbols of art in general. It depicts a character lost in thought and believed to be modeled after Rodin himself, or possibly his friend and fellow sculptor Paul Claudel. The work shows a nude male figure of over life size sitting on a rock with his chin resting on one hand as though deep in thought. The Thinker by Auguste Rodin is a symbol of enlightening ideas and the thoughtful contemplation of them. It is also a symbol of people thinking alone, which is good because in many situations there is no one else to turn to for an answer. The obverse features a french travertine tile pattern with the legal tender, the Coat of Arms du Tchad.
