Sitting Bull is a chief and shaman of the Hunkpapa tribe of the Teton Dakotas (Sioux). He co-authored the spectacular victory of the combined forces of the Dakotas and the Sheyenne at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. After the battle he led his men to Canada, where he found refuge from pursuing American cavalrymen. The Americans decided to deprive the Sioux of food by burning the prairies near the Canadian border and slaughtering the buffalo which were the main source of food for the Indians.
In 1881 he was forced to return to the United States, where he was confined to a reservation. In 1890, he was shot by Indian policemen in the service of the U.S. Army, who had orders to arrest him for participating in the banned Spirit Dance.
