The Pantheon in Rome is a circular temple in the Field of Mars, founded by Emperor Hadrian in 125 on the site of an earlier one of 27 BC, destroyed in a fire in 64 AD. The construction of the edifice was directed by Apollodoros, exiled and probably executed later by the emperor. The Pantheon was dedicated to the planetary deities and the then reigning emperor, and since the 7th century the Pantheon has been used as the Catholic church of Santa Maria ad Martyres. It is one of the best preserved buildings from the times of ancient Rome. The 42-metre dome of Santa Maria del Fiore by Filippo Bruneleschi in Florence was built on the model of the one in Rome. The Pantheon is also modelled on St Alexander's Church on Plac Trzech Krzyży in Warsaw.
