The XXIX Summer Olympic Games were held in Beijing. The decision to choose this particular location was made on 13 July 2001.
The obverse of the coin presents the image of the eagle established as the national emblem of the Republic of Poland. In the centre of the coin there is a square hole, and at the bottom there is an image of a fragment of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Just below the city there is the logo of the Polish Olympic Committee. On the reverse side there is an image of the player on a windsurfing board against the background of water waves and land.
Other cities also sought to organise the Olympics: Toronto (Canada), Paris (France), Istanbul (Turkey), Osaka (Japan). It is worth mentioning that these were the first summer games organised in Asia in 20 years, the last one took place in 1988 in Seoul (South Korea). The motto of the Chinese summer games was as follows: "One world, one dream".
The inauguration date was set by no coincidence, as it was on the eighth day, the eighth month, two thousand and eight years, at eight o'clock in the evening (eight is a number which is a symbol of happiness and all prosperity in Chinese numerology). Participants competed in 28 sports, including Badminton, baseball, boxing, canoeing, basketball, archery, football, handball, volleyball, tennis and fencing. What is interesting, in the Olympics for the first time took part representatives from Tuvalu and Marshall Islands, as well as players (separately) from Montenegro and Serbia. Poland was represented at the Olympics by 263 players and Kajetan Broniewski became the head of the Polish Olympic Mission.
The Polish representation was 16th in terms of the number of medals won, first place was taken by China, second by the United States and third by Russia. Our competitors won 4 gold medals (Tomasz Majewski - athletics; Konrad Wasilewski, Marek Kolbowicz, Michał Jeleński, Adam Korol - rowing; Leszek Blanik - gymnastics; Szymon Kołecki - weightlifting), 5 silver ones (Tomasz Motyka, Adam Wiercioch, Radosław Zawrotniak, Robert Andrzejuk - fencing; Łukasz Pawłowski, Bartłomiej Pawełczak, Miłosz Bernatajtys, Paweł Rańda - rowing; Piotr Małachowski - athletics; Maja Włoszczowska - cycling; Aneta Konieczna, Beata Mikołajczyk - canoeing) and 2 bronze (Agnieszka Wieszczek - wrestling; Marcin Dołęga - weight lifting).
