The second coin from the new "Hunters by Night" series.
It depicts an image of an eagle owl. Both the obverse and the reverse of the coin were covered with obsidian - an efflorescent rock consisting almost exclusively of volcanic glaze! It is formed by the immediate cooling of magma (lava). On the obverse there is an image of the night sky.
The high relief of the reverse makes the Eagle Owl appear very realistic.
The eagle owl is a species of large, sedentary bird that inhabits almost all of Eurasia. It was once extensively hunted (often associated with evil and death), and was also caught to be used as bait in hunting. Currently, it is a rare and timid bird, but its European population is slowly recovering, due to the fact that it is under species and zonal protection in many countries (including Poland).
