The first numismat from the series "Animals of Poland". Lynx is a species of terrestrial predatory mammal from the cat family. It can be found, among others, in Europe. Apart from domestic cats, lynx and wildcat are the only representatives of felidae occurring in Poland. Lynx is also one of the biggest predators in Europe. In Poland it is a rare and protected species. The research on the lynx population in Poland is conducted by the Institute of Mammal Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences. About 300 lynxes live in Poland. They belong to two populations. The lowland population is found in north-eastern Poland and the Carpathian population in the Eastern and Western Carpathians. Since 2019, the reintroduction of lynxes has started within the project "Return of the lynx to north-western Poland". Since 1994 it has been under strict species protection and is listed in the Polish Red Book of Animals.
