At the end of the nineteenth century sunflowers were very popular and were supposed to symbolize the joy of life. Artists were also eager to use sunflowers, which became a popular motif in art at that time. Van Gogh had to come into contact with sunflower paintings during his studies in Antwerp. He made his first attempts at presenting them in Paris, where four sunflower paintings were created, but it was only in the sunshine of Provence that he managed to achieve a perfect effect.
Vincent van Gogh has repeatedly returned to the same landscapes, scenes, faces and objects. Many of his works are based on one theme, reproduced in different shots. This is no different for "Sunflowers". A total of 11 works were created about them: 4 in Paris and 7 in Arles. The painting entitled "Still Life: A Vase with Twelve Sunflowers", dating from 1889, i.e. the period spent in Arles, is considered the most outstanding.
