The Threatened Swan is a painting by the Dutch Baroque painter Jan Asselijn. It depicts a swan fiercely defending its nest against a dog. The painting was created less than two years after the signing of the Peace of Westphalia which ended, among other things, many years of fighting against the Spanish crown for the independence of the Republic of the United Provinces. The seemingly laconic scene of the two animal struggle was interpreted by historians from the Nationale Kunst-Galerij as a political allegory: the white swan was supposed to symbolize the Dutch statesman, the great Dutch resident Johan de Witt, who defended the country from its enemies, and the dog - the enemy. The white swan became a symbol of the Dutch national resistance movement.
