This coin was created from 2 ounces of pure silver and 11.5 ounces of copper. This allowed for the exceptionally large diameter of the coin, allowing the reverse to be adorned with a detailed image of Saint George. The image on the coin is an interpretation of the medal designed by William Wyon, which was created in 1844 at the behest of Prince Albert.  Saint George is the hero of a legend that came to Europe during the Crusades, and gained a further flourish during the Renaissance. The earliest known description of the myth comes from the Cappadocian region and was written in the early 11th century. The legend tells about a dragon, which made its nest on a spring, from which the inhabitants of the town of Silene drew water. To get water, they had to bribe the dragon with gifts - a sheep or a beautiful girl. One day it fell on a princess, but she was saved from imminent death by Saint George, who arrived on time and defeated the beast. In gratitude, the people of Silene rejected paganism and embraced Christianity.
