The eighth coin from the Queen's Beasts series depicts the White Lion of Mortimers. On the occasion of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain in 1953, ten majestic beasts were erected at the entrance to Westminster Abbey, which to this day guard the gates to the famous Anglican temple. Each of the beasts is a statue approximately 1.8 meters high, symbolizing the historical legacy of the dynasty of one of the families or places associated with the Windsor dynasty. The Mortimer lion has no crown and has a blue tongue and holds a Yorkist shield bearing a ‘white rose en Soleil’ (golden sun) on a half and half background. The coin is 10 ounces of pure 999 silver.
