American Innovation 2023 - United States Mint

The American Innovation Coin Program is a multi-year series encompassing unique reverse designs that celebrate American innovation and commemorate individuals and groups from each state, territory, and the District of Columbia. In 2023, the coins depict the states of Mississippi, Indiana, Louisiana, and Ohio.

The coins in the set are struck from an alloy composed of 6.0% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2.0% nickel, and the remainder copper. The designs for the four reverse sides in 2023 were created by designers from the Artistic Infusion Program (AIP), and their forms were sculpted by the Mint Artists of the United States.

Ohio – It depicts hands holding tightly, the upper hand pulling the lower hand upward, symbolizing the support and strength required by both parties in the Underground Railroad. A chain attached to a primitive shackle around the wrist of the lower hand snaps and shatters, suggesting hope for freedom.

Louisiana – It depicts a Higgins Boat as if it were deployed during World War II, with its innovative landing ramp open on the beach.

Indiana – It depicts a series of vehicles showcasing innovations from Indiana's past and present. From top to bottom, the design includes an early-style gas-powered automobile, a representation of classic car production, and a recent model of an Indy-style race car.

Mississippi – This design depicts a pair of human lungs in the background, while a surgical assistant passes forceps to the surgeon during the first lung transplant surgery.

The obverse of all American Innovation dollars in the series features a profile image of the Statue of Liberty, along with the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the denomination "$1."

The design also includes a symbol in the form of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation, which changes annually in the program. The inscriptions "2023," mint mark, and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are incused on the edge of the coin.

All coins in the Reverse Proof Set were struck at the San Francisco Mint.

A certificate of authenticity is included with each set.
