In the year 2023, the National Bank of Poland ceremoniously commenced the issuance of a collection of gold coins titled Polish Circulating Banknotes, struck using a proof mirror die.
As the second in the series, a gold coin with a face value of 20 PLN has been unveiled, featuring a stylized depiction of a contemporary circulating banknote with the same denomination.
On the obverse of this exceptional coin, the portrait of King Bolesław I Chrobry is displayed, complemented by a Romanesque portal on the left side and the crown of a young oak from the Gniezno Doors on the right.
The reverse side is adorned with a silver denarius of Bolesław I Chrobry, featuring an image of a bird and the inscription "PRINCES POLONIE." On the left side, there is also a depiction of the rotunda of St. Nicholas in Cieszyn, while on the right side, a lion is depicted spread across a vegetative tendril, reminiscent of the Gniezno Doors.
The Golden Banknote 20 PLN stands out with distinctive features. It is crafted from pure gold with a fineness of 999.9/1000, measuring 50.00 × 25.00 mm and weighing 31.10 g. The coin also features a mirrored die, adding a unique shine to it. The coin's edge is kept in a smooth style, and the total mintage has been limited to just 1500 pieces.
The coin's design reflects the 20 PLN banknote. The coin is a creation of Robert Kotowicz. The issuer is the National Bank of Poland, while production was handled by Mennica Polska SA.
The premiere of the numismatic item Banknote 20 PLN is scheduled for January 23, 2024, further emphasizing the uniqueness of this collection.
